Acciaierie d'Italia under Extraordinary Administration, Ilva under Extraordinary Administration and DRI D'Italia sign MoU to build a direct reduction plant (DRI) with capacity of 2.5million tons

23/10/2024

Taranto, Oct. 23, 2024 -The companies Ilva under Extraordinary Administration, DRI d'Italia SpA and Acciaierie d'Italia under Extraordinary Administration announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), which formally pave the way of collaboration for the construction of a 2.5 million ton/year direct reduction plant at the Taranto facility.

While the extraordinary procedure to arrive at the sale of the Ilva Group and Acciaierie D'italia Group continues the MoU is an important step toward the decarbonization that will be completed by the buyers of the complex.

The technical groups of DRI of Italy SpA, Ilva under Extraordinary Administration and AdI under Extraordinary Administration have already carried out intensive analysis and development work. In particular, the feasibility studies conducted assume that the Plant can ensure the availability of infrastructure for storage and transportation of iron ore and auxiliary fluids.

The construction of the new plant is part of the enhancement process of Acciaierie d'Italia under Extraordinary Administration and will be carried out by DRI d'Italia through the financing assigned pursuant to Law no. 56. of April 29, 2024, in compliance with the timelines set out in the decarbonization plan for the Taranto production site. To this end, ADI under Extraordinary Administration, on the basis of the outcomes of the studies and engineering assessments conducted by DRI D'Italia, also with the support of third parties, will assess the need for possible upgrades to the infrastructure under management, such as possible improvements to the mining parks. The costs and methods of such possible upgrades will be the subject of contractual agreements, which will be defined at a later date.

The DRI technique has long been the one indicated for reducing CO2 emissions in steel production, with less use of coal. This is the reason why substantial public financial resources, about €1 billion, are available for the project, through cohesion funds.

The collaboration between the two extraordinary administrations and DRI Italia aims to pursue an innovative and strategic project for the future of the Taranto industrial site, with a focus on environmental sustainability issues.
