Acciaierie d'Italia in AS: Meeting with Unions seeking shared vision, focus on workers

07/05/2024

Rome, May 7, 2024 - The first technical meeting between the management of Acciaierie d'Italia in Extraordinary Administration (ADI in AS), represented by General Manager, Giuseppe Cavalli and Human Resources Director, Claudio Picucci, and representatives of national trade unions was held today at Confindustria headquarters in Rome.

After about two months, which was necessary to prevent ADI in AS from ending up in an irreversible crisis, management was able to structure a concrete Restart Plan, which was presented today during the meeting. In the immediate term, it aims to restore normal conditions for those facilities that have been identified, but also to create an "orderly management" that is essential for the company to become safe again for workers and then attractive to potential investors.

In this view, the plan is divided into three phases: "construction site" phase, 1-blast furnace phase with orderly management, and 2-blast furnace phase with orderly management. The pillars on which the revitalization project is based are:

o   restoration of identified plants, with an economic intervention around 400 million euros (80% in Taranto);

o   management of a production plan that starts from 1.5 million tons/year and reaches 4 million tons/year after the summer, with the start-up of the second blast furnace in Taranto. A hot rolling mill will also be operating in Taranto, while all cold rolling will go to Genoa, reaching after the summer 450,000 tons/year and 600,000 tons/year in Novi Ligure;

o   lean and efficient organization;

o   balanced and supportive management of the workforce, including through a specific program to improve workers' skills and professionalism.

To achieve the goals set forth in the Restart Plan, ADI in AS hopes for strong collaboration and participation of all parties involved. To this end, the company has identified a series of tools that will be declined in detail, with the goal of reaching a formal agreement with the unions by mid-June.

"Securing the plants and keeping production running, having the support of key customers and suppliers, was the preliminary step for us. Now it is necessary to involve the workers, giving them visibility of the next steps, making them participants in the Restart Plan and conveying to them and their families security and confidence. This will be the central aspect that can be appreciated by potential buyers," said Giuseppe Cavalli, General Manager of Acciaierie d'Italia in AS.

"What we have set out to the unions today is the need to work together in the interests of the company and the workers. It is essential to work side by side, with transparency and without tactics, to address the challenges we face. Dialogue and collaboration between unions and management, while respecting each other's roles, are essential to find shared solutions that can benefit everyone," added Claudio Picucci, Human Resources Director of Acciaierie d'Italia in AS.
