Cornigliano, June 1, 2024 - On the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the death of Guido Rossa, a worker and trade unionist at Italsider (later Ilva) in Genoa-Cornigliano who was murdered by the Red Brigades in 1979, the management of Acciaierie d'Italia in Extraordinary Administration, represented by commissioners Giancarlo Quaranta, Davide Tabarelli and Giovanni Fiori, has decided to open the plant to the city.
To mark the anniversary, a commemorative stamp dedicated to Guido Rossa was unveiled at the Steel School Training Room at the Acciaierie d'Italia plant in Cornigliano in the presence of the Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy, Adolfo Urso, the mayor of Genoa, Marco Bucci, Fiom representative Armando Palombo, and Poste Italiane's north-central areas philately sales coordinator, Claudio Vescovi. During the event, Don Franco Molinari, labor chaplain of Italsider, also held a moment of recollection dedicated to the memory of Rossa.
The ceremony was an important occasion to remember one of the most emblematic figures in Genoa's union history, whom the Council of Ministers, at the suggestion of the Ministry of Business and Made in Italy, decided to include in the Philatelic Plan for 2024, approved last April.
"We wanted to create a National Philatelic Plan with a precise political and cultural significance, touching on some of our country's major historical moments. Among them, the memory of Guido Rossa, included in the section dedicated to civic sense, honors those who fought for democracy and against terrorism. The stamp is a piece of collective memory, meant to be a warning against all forms of political violence. On this occasion, we want to reaffirm the value of Italian industry and steel, convinced that Italy must remain one of the major manufacturing and steel powers in Europe and the world," said Adolfo Urso, Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy.
"The stamp we presented today is not only a tribute to Guido Rossa, but a tangible sign of our collective memory. It is a way to keep his memory alive in future generations and to reaffirm our commitment to never forget that tragic page experienced by our country. Genoa is a city that has always known how to respond with dignity and firmness to the most difficult challenges. The story of Guido Rossa is but one chapter in our relentless effort to build a more just and safe society," added Marco Bucci, mayor of Genoa.
The event was also a moment of reflection on the path of revitalization undertaken by Acciaierie d'Italia to enable, on the one hand, the resumption of production at the plants and, on the other hand, ensure the execution of maintenance activities aimed at re-establishing safety and continuity in the production levels of the plants, as well as ensuring the employment of employees.
"Guido Rossa was a symbolic figure of union courage and commitment, whose memory must be preserved and honored. The presentation of the commemorative stamp is not only a tribute to his memory, but also a tangible sign of respect from the entire community for his work. Today's initiative is also an opportunity to share with the citizens the commitment of Acciaierie d'Italia to re-establish production, reliability and quality of the plants as a crucial goal to ensure the operability of the production cycle," said Giancarlo Quaranta, extraordinary commissioner of Acciaierie d'Italia in AS.
